Sail Makers on Martha's Vineyard
The L.F. Pease Company story begins in 1866 on Martha's Vineyard. The Pease family got their start as sail makers — crafting and repairing sails for the fishing and merchant vessels that worked the waters off the New England coast.
It was demanding, detail-oriented work. Every sail had to be cut precisely, stitched to withstand gale-force winds, and rigged to perform flawlessly in unpredictable ocean conditions. The Pease family built their reputation on doing it right — no shortcuts, no compromises.

From Sails to Shade
In 1866, the Pease family permanently established the business in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. As the age of sail gave way to modern industry, they applied their expertise in fabric, tension, and structural design to a growing range of products — becoming famous as craftsman manufacturers of sails, rope, tarps, awnings, tents, canopies, and even wagon horse covers.
Providence to East Providence
As the business grew, the downtown Providence shop was no longer enough. The company moved to Grosvenor Avenue in East Providence, and then again to a larger 25,000 square foot manufacturing facility on Massasoit Avenue in East Providence — where the Pease family built their reputation as New England's go-to name for custom awnings and shade products.
East Providence to West Warwick
As the product line expanded into sunrooms, pergolas, hurricane shutters, and motorized screens, even the Massasoit Avenue facility could no longer keep up. The company relocated to an even larger space at 25 James P Murphy Industrial Highway in West Warwick, RI — our home today.
Still Family. Still Building.
